State-of-the-Art Oral DNA Testing

 

What is Oral DNA Testing?

Oral DNA testing is a quick, non-invasive test to determine the specific bacteria in your mouth which are causing an infection.  Gum (periodontal) disease is an infection in the  mouth that is the primary cause of tooth loss in adults.  This testing will identify which antibiotics are best for treating your gum disease.  
 

 

  

How is the Testing Done?

•You will swish for 30 seconds with a special saline solution.  A sample of this solution is sent to a lab for identification of the bacteria present. 

 

 •On your next visit we will show you your results. The specific bacteria present in your mouth will be listed.  Dr. Finney will use this information to recommend a  systemic (taken orally) antibiotic for your infection. 

 

Who Should Have Oral DNA Testing?

We strongly recommend this testing for EVERYONE  who has periodontal disease. 
 
We especially recommend Oral DNA testing if you have had periodontal therapy and continue to have evidence of gum disease, if you have a family history of periodontal disease (parents lost their teeth at a young age) or you have medical conditions which make you more likely to have gum disease.
