Dentures/Partial Dentures

Types of Dentures:

>> A denture or a complete denture as it is often called, is an appliance that is inserted in the mouth to replace natural teeth and provide support for the cheeks and lips.  It replaces all upper teeth, all lower teeth, or both. Complete dentures are made of acrylic (plastic). Dr. Finney recommends attaching  complete dentures to dental implants for the most secure and comfortable fit possible. 

>> A partial denture replaces one or more teeth by using remaining teeth as support. Partial dentures are made of metal and acrylic.  Dr. Finney recommends attaching partial dentures to dental implants for the most secure and comfortable fit possible. 

How Dr. Finney Makes Complete Dentures

  • If teeth need to be removed for a complete denture: Dr. Finney makes an immediate denture which is worn for approximately the first year after the extractions.  This immediate denture is lined  with soft liners, allowing tissues to heal while maintaining the fit of the denture.  After the year, the final denture is made to fit on the healed gums.  
  • If no teeth need to removed because an existing denture is being replaced: Dr. Finney can make the final denture within a short period of time.

Teeth in a Complete or Partial Denture

The teeth in a denture are made of plastic or  porcelain.   All dentures are previewed with the teeth mounted in wax.  They must be approved by you, the patient, before the denture is finished.

Care of Your Dentures

Over time, dentures will wear and need to be replaced or relined because  bone and gum ridges recede or shrink due to the extraction of the teeth and the aging process.  Replacing or relining your dentures approximately every 10 years will keep the jaw alignment normal.
