What is a Root Canal?

A root canal is one of the most common dental procedures with well over 14 million performed every year. This simple treatment can save your natural teeth and prevent the need of dental implants or permanent bridges.
 
At the center of your tooth is pulp. Pulp is a collection of blood vessels and nerves that build the surrounding tooth. Infection of the pulp can be caused by an injury to the tooth, deep decay, or cracks and chips. Symptoms of an infection of dental pulp can be   visible injury or swelling near the tooth, sensitivity to temperature, or pain in the tooth and gums.  One of the symptoms most often associated with needing  root canal is if the tooth hurts on its own or wakes you up at night.  
 
If you experience any of these symptoms, please call our office so Dr. Finney  can examine your tooth to determine whether  root canal treatment is needed.   Success with root canal treatment is about 90%. If your tooth is not a good candidate for a root canal, Dr. Finney will discuss other options with you.   

How is a Root Canal Performed?

The injured pulp is removed and the root canal system is thoroughly cleaned and sealed. This therapy involves local anesthesia, with a numbing gel applied as the first step. The anesthesia is given VERY slowly to lessen any possible discomfort. Conscious sedation will be provided if needed. See Comfort Care for more information.   You will be able to drive home after your treatment, and in most cases you will be able to return  to your normal routine.
 
When your root canal treatment is completed, your tooth will be in a weakened condition and at a high risk of breaking.  For this reason, we recommend a supporting crown to restore your tooth to full strength.  Many times a one-visit porcelain  crown (CEREC)  can be completed at your  root canal appointment.
