Fillings/Restorations

We are a mercury-free practice. However, many people still have silver/mercury fillings in their mouths from years past. These fillings are not particularly pleasing to the eye, and we know that silver/mercury fillings ultimately result in a weaker tooth structure. Porcelain Inlays/Onlays and Tooth Colored Composite Restorations  create restored teeth   that are esthetically pleasing and very strong, thanks to new bonding technologies.

Disadvantages of Silver Fillings

Silver fillings have many drawbacks. The edges of  silver fillings can wear down, become weak, or break. Over time,  metal in silver fillings expands, contracts, and can weaken teeth.  All of this can result in a tooth not being protected, allowing cavities to start once again.

Silver fillings contain 50 percent mercury. They can corrode, leak and cause stains on your teeth and gums. Fortunately, silver fillings can safely be replaced with Tooth-Colored Restorations.

Replacing Silver Fillings with Composite Resin Fillings

Tooth colored composite fillings can be used for small areas of decay where porcelain, with its higher strength, is not needed.

Advantages of Tooth-Colored Porcelain Restorations

There are many advantages to tooth-colored porcelain restorations. Porcelain inlays and onlay are bonded to the teeth creating a tight fit to the natural tooth. Such restorations are used when much of the tooth structure has been lost. The tooth remains intact and stronger.  The result is a beautiful smile!

Replacing Silver Fillings with a Tooth Colored Porcelain Restoration

You can have your silver fillings replaced with tooth-colored restorations (inlays/onlays) in ONE visit. Once the damaged tooth or filling is removed, the tooth is prepared and an extremely accurate picture is taken to make the restoration.  The restoration, which  is made using the latest dental technology, is bonded to your tooth with a strong resin and polished to a smooth finish.  See One-Visit Porcelain Crown (CEREC) for more Information.

How Do I Care for my New Filling or Restoration?

Proper care of your restoration is very important.  Please see Care of Fillings/Restorations under Home Care Instructions

Your tooth is restored to a natural look and feel; it is stronger; and the tooth is protected!
